Partner Blog: Nuclear Waste Management Organization

Writer: OLIP InternsOLIP Interns

The interns were fortunate enough meet with Marcus Mattinson, Senior Advisor on the Government and External Relations team at the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO)––one of our valued partners which make our program possible. Since its founding year of 2002, the not-for-profit organization has been tasked with the safe, long-term management of Canada’s intermediate and high-level radioactive waste in a manner that protects people and the environment for generations to come.

During the meeting, we spoke about the current state of energy in Ontario and what role nuclear energy plays within it. Furthermore, Mr. Mattinson shared insights into the search and selection process that ended with the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation and the Township of Ignace being chosen as the host communities for the future site of Canada’s deep geological repository for used nuclear fuel. This new site poses great promise in the future of the nation’s and province’s energy sectors and the economy.

We look forward to following these developments and visiting nuclear sites later this year to learn even more. Thank you to Mr. Mattinson for being gracious with his time and to NWMO for their continued support of OLIP!
