The OLIP Interns recently had the pleasure of meeting with one of our partners, the Canadian Nuclear Isotope Council (CNIC). The CNIC is an independent, not-for-profit advocacy and member services organization, established to aid the coordination of organizations that use and develop nuclear isotopes. Currently, Canada is positioned as a global leader in the production of life-saving isotopes, which are crucial for the continued function of the scientific, academic, healthcare, and nuclear sectors. The CNIC is dedicated to supporting Canada’s strong developments in nuclear isotopes by advocating for long-term policies that support healthcare innovation.
As the CNIC explained to us, nuclear isotopes are incredibly important for numerous current medical treatments as well as medical research, such as those for various forms of cancer. Thus, their work to support their use, development and availability is dedicated to the formation of public policy that is risk-informed, science-based, and supports public health and safety. The CNIC advocates for a responsible, intelligent, and well-informed approach that encourages the safe expansion of Canada’s leadership role in the global medical community by supporting new and innovative treatments.
Executive Director and Vice President, Melody Greaves, Public Affairs and Stakeholder Relations Specialist, Evan Cameron, and Policy and Project Coordinator, Amanda Tieber, all came down to Queen’s Park to meet with the Interns. They were kind enough to provide us with a detailed understanding of their work, purpose, and activities as an organization. Their knowledge of not only the advocacy work that they do, but also on nuclear isotopes themselves, helped us to understand the incredible importance of this innovative application of modern scientific developments.
Not only is the CNIC an incredibly valuable partner of OLIP, but both Melody and Evan are alumni of the programme, giving us a fantastic opportunity to learn about the successes of former interns and the opportunities that await after OLIP. Melody completed her tenure with OLIP in 2021-22, and Evan in 2023-24. It was inspiring to see their tenacity and passion for their work.
Thank you, Melody, Evan and Amanda, for taking the time to see us!
