Our Meeting with the Sergeant-at-Arms

We had the opportunity to meet with Tim McGough, the Sergeant-at-Arms of the Ontario Legislative Assembly. The Sergeant-at-Arms directs the Legislative Protective Service to ensure security across the Chamber and precinct.

We enjoyed learning about his past experiences in the British Army, police force, and at Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alberta. We also learned about the ceremonial role of the Speaker’s procession and the mace; rooted in hundreds of years of parliamentary tradition. It was incredibly interesting to learn how his role now extends to digital protective services in a digital age.

We extend our gratitude to Sergeant McGough for taking the time to thoughtfully answer our questions and starting our Legislative Assembly pin collection with a pin of the mace!
