The OLIP interns had the opportunity to meet with Trevor Day, the 9th Clerk of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. The Clerk serves both a procedural and administrative role; Mr. Day advises the Speaker and members on procedural matters while overseeing the operations of the Assembly and its team of over 400 staff.
The interns had the opportunity to learn about his early career employed on contract at the Supply and Services Branch, to transitioning to various roles across the Legislature. It was incredible to hear about his over 25 years of dedicated service. A particularly proud moment he shared was his role in carving a mural in the Chamber depicting the Seven Grandfather Teachings. We enjoyed hearing his joy in ensuring Anishinaabe guiding principles are integrated into the Legislature.
When asked if he had advice for the interns as we begin our time at Queen’s Park, Mr. Day shared the following: “Do not let the destination overwhelm the OLIP experience. Enjoy the now, commit to learning, and celebrate!” We are grateful to Mr. Day for welcoming us to the Assembly and preparing us for our exciting 10 months ahead!
