Before our winter holidays, we had the opportunity to meet with long-time award-winning journalist, Robert Fisher. Mr. Fisher obtained a Master of Journalism Degree from Carleton University, where his thesis explored the role of women in politics, and particularly the evolution of respect attributed to women politicians, as well as the double standards that he witnessed while working at Queen’s Park. He has had an extensive career in journalism, with almost five decades of radio and television reporting at local, provincial and national levels. Mr. Fisher spent around 30 years covering Queen’s Park for the CBC and as Global Television’s first Bureau Chief at theOntario Legislature, making him a well-known figure by former politicians, including several former Premiers! During our meeting, Mr. Fisher shared many interesting anecdotes from hislong career at the Ontario Legislature, including his interactions with politicians during the Wynne, McGuinty, Harris, Rae, Peterson and Davis administrations. As interns coming into Queen’s Park several years later, it was fascinating for us to hear stories from the past and observe how the rapports between journalists and politicians have evolved and continue to change over time—including through the socialisation culture that surrounds the profession. We thank Mr. Fisher for taking the time to meet with us, and for the candid and lively stories he shared with us!
