I am so grateful to have worked with MPP Deepak Anand, who ensured that my first placement was a rich learning opportunity by giving me the chance to support him with a variety of tasks and events. MPP Anand represents the riding of Mississauga-Malton, which has a population of 116,905 people (in 2021), as well as Toronto Pearson International Airport – Canada's busiest airport -- and many businesses, large and small.
I was able to support MPP Anand in all aspects of his work, whether that be helping to write speeches and Member’s Statements for him to read in the Legislature, prepping him for his committee duties, or research and outreach for constituents and local businesses. On one occasion, I sat in on meetings related to his role as Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development.
I especially enjoyed seeing MPP Anand in his element, including at one of his biggest events of the year – his Family Paint Night. MPP Anand cheerfully greeted his guests and volunteers, as community members poured into the venue with excitement to paint alongside their friends and family. It was also fascinating to tune into budget consultation sessions virtually and in person, where community members and organizations presented to panels of MPPs (including MPP Anand) and shared their ideas and hopes for the upcoming budget. Alongside these experiences, I had the opportunity to respond to some questions raised by constituents, which broadened my understanding of the range of challenges that individuals and stakeholders in Ontario face and how best they can advocate for themselves.
Thank you MPP Anand, for enthusiastically supporting the OLIP programme by hosting interns year after year and for featuring us in your Member’s Statement last month. Click here to watch MPP Anand’s Member’s Statement.
