For my assembly placement, I had the amazing opportunity to work with the Precinct Properties Branch. The branch sits within the Building Services Division and is responsible for all building operations within the Legislative Building and Whitney Block. The Precinct Properties Branch oversees general repair and maintenance services but is also responsible for specialized heritage conservation projects.
During my time with Precinct Properties, I produced a report on the 11 sculptures and statues of Ontario’s Legislative Assembly grounds. To compile the report, I sorted through archival materials, detailing the history of each sculpture’s erection, funding, and maintenance. Queen’s Park’s external statues tell a fascinating story about the history of our province through art and heritage.
Thanks to everyone at Precinct Properties for welcoming me into their office with such warmth. This fall was an interesting time to work with the branch given ongoing research into the renovation and decampment of Queen’s Park. Special thanks to Albena Bakalov and Jelena Bajcetic for all their support in the production of my report, and for their numerous edits!
