Legislative Placements: Ayesha with The Legislative Library

The Legislative Library provides non-partisan, confidential research services and fulfills information-related needs for MPPs, their staff, legislative committees, and the Legislative Assembly of Ontario staff. I learned this first-hand having been placed with the team for my assembly placement earlier this year.

Here, I learned about the functioning core teams housed within the Library (i.e., research, circulation, and metadata), their different goals, and how and in what circumstances they collaborate within each other and other branches. Additionally, I was lucky enough to tour the stacks, take a look at the rare collection, get demos of several machinery including the microfilm reader, and even see their book elevator in action!

During my time there, I also worked on a project recommending future adaptation strategies for the Current Data Files. Through these recommendations, the Library can begin moving towards a digital future for this system which currently contain a significant number of physical documents in a manner that retains the spirit of the collection while making it more functional and resilient.

Thank you to the entire Legislative Library team for an amazing placement and a special thanks to Grace Renwick for being an exceptional supervisor!
