I had the pleasure of working for the Legislative Research Office during my Legislative Assembly placement, aiding in their non-partisan work to provide specialized informational resources and reports. Operating under the Director, Mike, and Manager, Susan, I was fortunate enough to be able to get to know and learn from the entire team, and especially my supervisor, Lauren.
For a bit of context, the Legislative Research Office has a few key functions; offering generalized information in the openly accessible Provincial Affairs Briefings, aiding the various committees in a supportive role, and responding to confidential questions posed by Members of Provincial Parliament with their specialized knowledge on various fields. During the placement, I gained exposure to each of these three focuses, developing a far better understanding of a wealth of topics and, perhaps most importantly, the role of the Legislative Assembly itself in facilitating parliamentary proceedings.
I initially focused on Provincial Affairs Briefings, working on four different PAB topics: Medical Assistance in Dying, The Auto-Sector, Public Health, and Daylight Savings Time. I am proud to say that, with the guidance and oversight of Lauren and the rest of the team, I was able to publish the PAB on MAiD. After I had become better acquainted with the writing style, I helped with a research report for a private question.
Overall, I could not be happier with my placement. The environment was extremely professional but also super welcoming, and I felt like I had a very supportive and knowledgeable network of talented individuals to learn from. To the Legislative Research Office, I want to finish off by expressing my utmost gratitude for all the work you did to give me such a rewarding experience. Seriously, thank you for everything, it truly was a great experience.
